Government reforms teachers' housing: Better quality of life for teachers!

On October 11, 2025, the Minister of Education Dr. Narumol Pinyosinwat in Chiang Rai presented a comprehensive reform of the education system, which is primarily intended to improve the quality of life of teachers. These measures are the focus of a review of the current education situation, during which the minister also spoke to teachers, managers and lecturers. “The quality of teachers’ living conditions is crucial for the entire education system,” emphasized Dr. Narumon.[LINE Today]

A central concern of the reform is the improvement of teachers' housing. There are currently over 41,000 teacher accommodation units available, of which more than 14,900 are in poor condition. The government now plans to push ahead with necessary renovations and new construction together with the Ministry of Social Development and Security and the National Housing Authority. These initiatives are intended to improve not only the living space but also the general well-being of teachers.[Thansettakij]

Financial support for teachers

An equally important element of the reform is the creation of a new central cooperative to manage teachers' financial debts. With the help of this cooperative, teachers can transfer their debt to a central point, which should significantly improve the debt structure. What is interesting here is the interest rate regulation: for the first four years, the interest rates for participating teachers will gradually increase from 0% to a maximum of 4%. To make this possible, the Education Ministry wants to seek about 6 billion baht from the state to provide interest subsidies.[LINE Today]

These reform approaches go hand in hand with a professional upgrade of teachers, which should enable them to apply for their qualifications without long waiting times. The measures are designed to increase teachers' satisfaction and stability and strengthen their commitment to the profession.[Thansettakij]

Challenges in the education system

Despite these positive developments, the educational situation in Thailand continues to hang by a thread. The poor quality of the education system has been criticized for decades, and previous attempts at reform have often failed to deliver the desired results. The planned competency-based curriculum, which was due to be introduced in 2021, was canceled just 11 days before the start of the 2022 semester in order not to affect the publication of textbooks. This results in a delay in modernizing the curriculum, forcing students to continue learning in an outdated system that does not prepare for the demands of the modern labor market.[Thailand Tip]

Additionally, teachers and parents must contend with the bureaucracy of the traditional teaching approach, which relies heavily on rote learning. This approach includes over 2000 learning indicators and is considered ineffective. Active learning, which aims at engagement and practical application of knowledge, remains an unfulfilled wish in many state schools.[Thailand Tip]

The reforms that Dr. Narumol Pinyosinwat and his government are ultimately intended to help restore trust in the education system and sustainably improve the reality of life for teachers. But whether the change will be deep enough to finally be considered a success remains to be seen.
