Bali fights against power outage: 74 flights affected!

Something very special is happening in aviation in Phuket. A daring project is in the starting blocks: seaplanes will take tourism in the region to a new level from mid-2026. Aeronautical Radio of Thailand has announced plans to test a seaplane service between Phuket and Trang from next year. This project aims not only to facilitate access to unique maritime destinations, but also to significantly transform Thailand's tourism landscape. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is optimistic about the initiative, which is part of his strategy to economically revitalize regions like Phuket.

The concept of seaplanes is not new, but the implementation in Thailand is now getting a breath of fresh air through the collaboration with Siam Seaplane. This company was founded in 2019 and, together with various government and private sector agencies, plans to have the Seaplane service operational by 2024. Ao Po Pier in Phuket was chosen as the first starting point, where the first water landing and take-off sites are being examined.

Seaplane as a new tourism highlight

The seaplanes are intended not only to attract tourists, but also to play an important role in medical support and disaster relief. Deputy Minister of Transport Manaporn Charoensri opened a three-day workshop in Phuket to coordinate the first steps in the Seaplane tourism initiative. The event brought together representatives from various agencies to discuss requirements and regulatory standards.

“We have big plans for a sustainable improvement in aviation infrastructure,” explains Charoensri. The Ministry of Transport supports these efforts to increase the efficiency of air transport in Thailand, which not least contributes to economic development. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAAT) plays a crucial role in ensuring that all safety standards are met.

Cooperation with luxury resorts

Another component of the project is close cooperation with luxury resorts such as the Amanpuri and the InterContinental Phuket Resort. These partnerships demonstrate the hotel industry's strong interest in the new seaplane services, which have the potential to boost tourism in Phuket. Hotel managers agree: “This will help us improve the attractiveness of our offers and reach new target groups.”

The seaplane concept could help Phuket move into a new era of travel guides and sustainable tourism. With a clear vision and the support of all relevant sectors, Thailand is well on its way to establishing itself as a regional aviation hub. The first pilot projects in the coming months will show whether the concept really takes off.
