Thailand goes digital: True Corporation shows green vision of the future!

The NBTC Symposium 2025 is in full swing in Bangkok, and True Corporation has sent a strong signal for a sustainable digital future. With a focus on advancing the telecommunications industry and creating long-term value for businesses and society, the company has presented its vision. The Bangkok Post reported that the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) organized the event, which brings together industry leaders to discuss digital technologies and challenges.

Mr. Chakkrit Urairat, Chief Regulatory and Government Relations Officer at True Corporation, highlighted the importance of digital transformation for Thailand's competitiveness. A critical element of this transformation is artificial intelligence (AI), and True is committed to making AI accessible to everyone. This accessibility is intended to help promote AI literacy among the population to make the digital ecosystem more competitive.

Green and digital: A double focus

In his speech, Mr. Navneet Nayan, Head of Network Strategy, also emphasized the role of mobile operators in promoting sustainable technologies. True is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 21% by 2025 and 42% by 2030 compared to 2020. In the long term, the company aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. They rely on intelligent technologies such as AI and machine learning to optimize energy consumption.

In line with these goals, True has already reduced energy consumption at its network sites by up to 20% and modernized more than 17,000 base stations. These steps are urgently needed because, as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) report shows, carbon emissions in the technology sector continue to rise, particularly due to developments in AI and growing data infrastructure. In 2023, digital companies contributed 0.8% of all global energy-related emissions, a clear sign that the sector itself still has a lot of work to do.

Opportunities and challenges of digitalization in Thailand

However, it is not just telecommunications that is changing. Thailand is also making great progress on a larger economic scale. Digitalization and new technologies are driving the economy, and international companies are showing increasing interest in the country. To further advance digital transformation, the Thai government has established a Ministry of Digital Economy. Infrastructure projects and digital initiatives offer numerous investment opportunities.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a serious impact on the Thai economy in 2020, but moderate growth of 2.3% to 2.8% is expected for 2024. Greater access to digital technologies, such as 4G and the upcoming rollout of 5G networks, will not only improve quality of life, but could also stabilize and even increase the country's GDP, with one goal being for the digital economy to account for over 30% of GDP by 2027.

But challenges still exist: a lack of IT specialists and dependence on international technology companies are slowing progress. Programs like HACKaTHAILAND aim to promote digital skills among the population and increase innovation. It remains to be seen whether initiatives such as the Digital Economy Promotion Agency will be able to bring about the necessary changes.

It is crucial for the population and companies to adapt to these changes and take advantage of the opportunities that digitalization offers. Thailand is in the process of repositioning itself through technology and modern digital strategies, and only time will tell how well it does this.
