Paying homage to King Bhumibol: celebrations are underway in Mae Sariang

On October 13, 2025, many people gathered in Mae Sariang to commemorate the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). On this special day, a solemn occasion was held in the auditorium of the district administration, which not only honored the king's achievements but also touched the hearts of those present. Mae Sariang District Chief Worasak Phanthong was the keynote speaker and welcomed the numerous government officials, military representatives, police and school administrators who, along with pupils, students and committed citizens from the region, loudly expressed their sadness and gratitude. The atmosphere was calm and respectful, which further underlined the great importance of this day of remembrance. The honor took place on the occasion of the “Wanamindr Maharat” national holiday, established since 2023 to commemorate the beloved monarch. Chiang Mai News reports that this day is a deeply rooted tradition in Thai culture.

But who was this monarch who ruled Thailand for 70 years? King Bhumibol was born on December 5, 1927 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and ascended the throne on June 9, 1946, upon the death of his brother, King Ananda Mahidol. Commander is well remembered for his active role in Thai society, which included more than 2,000 projects in various areas such as health, education and the environment. His “sufficiency economy” philosophy promoted self-sufficiency among citizens and helped improve the living conditions of many Thais. He was also a musical talent and composed a total of 47 songs, which also underlined his recognition as a “National Artist”. Thansettakij highlights that his diverse talents and achievements earned him almost divine status among many Thais.

A legacy of merit

Bhumibol is known for his role in transforming Thailand into an economic power in the region. During his rule, Thailand experienced strong economic development, having the highest growth rate in the world between 1985 and 1994. However, these successes have been overshadowed by political crises and military overthrows, such as the most recent coup in 2014, which often replaced civilian governments. Despite these challenges, Bhumibol sought to promote a gradual democratization process in Thailand. Wikipedia impressively documents how complex and multi-layered his political role was in a country that was often characterized by instability.

King Bhumibol passed away on October 13, 2016 at the prestigious Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok at the age of 88. His death left behind a national mourning that was expressed in countless funeral marches and memorial events. His cremation took place in 2017 in a large-scale ceremony watched by millions of Thais who wanted to pay their last respects to their monarch.

Today, on Remembrance Day, not only the person Bhumibol is honored, but his life's work remains alive in people's minds. The sustainability of his projects and ideas continues to shape the lives of many Thais and reflects his desire to give people a better life. On days like these it becomes clear how important it is to honor the legacy of a monarch who is considered by many to be the “Father of the Nation”.
