Mayor warns: Danger of thunderstorms in Mae Hong Son – tourists beware!
The mayor of Mae Hong Son strongly warns tourists and the public about the dangers posed by thunderstorms in the mountains. Dangerous lightning strikes regularly occur, especially at Doi Pui Luang, a popular destination for hikers. On October 12, 2025, a 30-year-old tourist suffered injuries during a violent thunderstorm caused by her stay in the mountains. Patthaporn Rattanasukon, from Thung Song district in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, was traveling with a group of 20 people from Bangkok when she was hit.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. and the injured person sustained burn injuries requiring immediate medical attention. After initial relief efforts from other tourists and porters who helped with the evacuation, she was taken by ambulance to Sri Sangwan Hospital in Mae Hong Son at 7:45 p.m. Present were local officials, including the director of tourism and sports and the district manager, who informed the governor about the incident.
The correct behavior during thunderstorms
The mayor strongly advises caution during thunderstorms: cell phones should be turned off to minimize the risk of a lightning strike. Hikers should crouch low in open areas and beware of tall trees or huts, as these are known hazards. These preventative measures are important because lightning strikes are common in the Doi Pui Luang region, especially at the beginning of the cool season. Statistics show that such extreme weather events have increased in recent years, partly attributed to climate change.
In addition, it is advisable to seek shelter in sturdy buildings or vehicles during a thunderstorm as these provide security. When outdoors, you should avoid water and seek shelter in a deeper area. If thunderstorms are imminent, it is always advisable to consult a weather app and choose lightning-proof accommodation. When preparing for a hike, you should also be aware of the risks and know the strategic rules of behavior outdoors.
First aid and aftercare
Lightning strikes are potentially life-threatening, reports indicate. Proper first aid can be crucial in such an incident. Immediate chest compressions if the victim is lifeless can ensure survival - over 80% of those affected can be successfully resuscitated within the first five minutes. Injured people who have been struck by lightning should be monitored in an intensive care unit for at least 24 hours even after first aid, as further complications can arise.
In summary, in the mountains of Mae Hong Son, it is important to be vigilant and take authorities' warnings seriously. Thunderstorms are no fun and can release dangerous energy. The incident with the tourist should serve as a warning example to be well prepared at all times and to recognize and avoid dangerous situations.
