New flight from Surabaya to Bangkok: Thailand's tourism is booming!
Thailand relies on air connections and tourism promotion
To boost the region's tourist flows, Thailand launched a direct flight from Surabaya to Bangkok on October 2, 2025. This new connection, which runs four times a week, further enhances the existing connection. The flight departs from Juanda International Airport in Surabaya at 1:30 p.m. and arrives at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok at 5:50 p.m. With this measure, Thailand wants to promote regional networking and also strengthen the tourist attraction for travelers from Indonesia.
Thailand's strategy to position itself as a preferred destination for Indonesian tourists is based on a targeted increase in flight frequencies. Already in the first half of 2025, AirAsia transported over 310,000 passengers from cities such as Jakarta, Medan and Bali. An additional 10,000 visitors from Surabaya are now expected in the fourth quarter of 2025, bringing Thailand as a whole to a target of 900,000 Indonesian visitors for the year.
Strengthening the domestic travel market
But not only international connections are on the agenda. In the fourth quarter of 2023, AirAsia Thailand increased the frequency of 14 domestic routes to meet increasing demand during the year-end travel season. A total of 18 daily flights will be added, increasing the number of daily domestic flights from 87 to a remarkable 105. Destinations such as Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi are particularly in demand. The average utilization of flights in the third quarter was already an impressive 93 percent; AirAsia is even targeting a load factor of 95 percent for the fourth quarter.
Ms. Tansita Akrarittipirom, Head of Commercial at AirAsia, highlights the importance of the fourth quarter for domestic travel. In particular, VISA freedom for certain groups of visitors from countries such as China, India and Taiwan is seen as a crucial factor in further increasing demand.
Comfortable and diverse travel options
Traveling within Thailand is very convenient thanks to the many airlines available. A total of six Thai airlines serve domestic flights: Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air, Thai Airways and Thai VietJetAir. While Thai AirAsia has 25 destinations on offer, Bangkok Airways flies to ten domestic destinations and operates three of its own airports: Koh Samui, Trat and Sukhothai. Ticket prices for domestic flights are usually quite attractive, starting at around 25 euros from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. An exception are flights to Koh Samui, which are often more expensive.
Travelers should note that extras such as checked baggage and meals often incur additional fees. Booking is easy via the airline websites or platforms such as Skyscanner and 12Go. Popular airports that control flight operations in Thailand include Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Don Mueang Airport and Phuket International Airport.
With these measures, Thailand not only shows an open ear for the needs of its travelers, but also focuses on sustainable and balanced tourism development. Enjoy the diverse opportunities the country has to offer!
