While there are plenty of famous female Latin American novelists, not many are as famous as one of the first. You may not know this about yourself, but Octavio Paz was Latin America’s most famous writer from the early 1970s through the mid-1990s. Paz was recognized by critics for his work on popular culture (cinema, theater, television) and politics. According to Rolando Vértiz, his work represented an “exhilaratingly erotic outlook.” Paz died on November 30, 1998 at the age of 78, and he is remembered as a passionate defender of the native peoples of Latin America. Among his most famous works was a short book called The Labyrinth of Solitude, which was also the title of a 1975 documentary film. The book is really a series of meditations on memory. It’s also a book about death, which Paz described as a “gourd-colored flower” of the “sevenfold week” (a week—or a musical note—represents a day in Latin American culture). One of Paz’s first literary mentors in Mexico was Dante Alighieri. Paz studied literature at the Universidad de México and was deeply inspired by the line “Know yourself” from the Divine Comedy. Paz’s most widely read novel is The Last Generation, but he also wrote novels such as Ceremony, the first of his books to be translated into English. His work is considered a canon for Latin American literature.Paz was a key figure in 20th century Mexico. He was born in Mexico City on July 5, 1914, but he spent most of his life abroad. He studied literature at the University of Mexico (México) in Mexico City, where he graduated in 1934. Paz’s major influences were poets such as Pablo Neruda, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Ruben Dario. He lived in several different countries, including Nicaragua, Italy, and France, before returning to Mexico. He wrote two books, The Octavio Paz Reader (El trappista) and The Octavio Paz Reader in English, that focus on his experiences with his formative years. After publishing a few novels, he became a famous political commentator and writer. There were
