AutoCAD 23.1 PC/Windows 24/07
AutoCAD 23.1 [Mac/Win]
AutoCAD was originally built with a timeline-based drafting system called Vectorworks; the two are incompatible, with Vectorworks continuing to use the timeline terminology of “drawing” in contrast to the 2D, view-based drafting system of AutoCAD. AutoCAD 2018, released on September 25, 2018, is the first major update since AutoCAD 2016.
This article provides some of the essentials of AutoCAD for beginners. A more in-depth, in-depth tutorial on how to use AutoCAD and Vectorworks, can be found here.
Setting up AutoCAD
To install AutoCAD, you must first download a copy of the software and run the setup program that is provided with the application.
You can download AutoCAD from the Autodesk website. The Autodesk official download page provides links to both Windows and Mac versions of the software. Once you have your own copy of AutoCAD, launch the program and run the setup program.
The setup program can be started from within AutoCAD, or from the desktop or start menu. When you run the setup program for the first time, you are prompted to choose a location on your computer where AutoCAD will save its programs. Choosing an appropriate location can be very important. Make sure that you save the program in a place where you can easily find it.
AutoCAD can be installed on Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Solaris. AutoCAD 2018 is supported on all of these operating systems.
Tutorials for AutoCAD
The Autodesk website contains many free tutorial videos, many of which cover AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT in depth. AutoCAD has changed considerably since the tutorials were first released in the 1990s.
How to Use Basic Features
The AutoCAD Tutorials page contains videos showing how to use the various features of AutoCAD, including the drawing board, selections, commands, the menus, toolbars, layers, palettes, drafting tools, and 3D drawing options.
You can also find helpful information about how to use AutoCAD on the Autodesk Knowledge Network. The Autodesk Knowledge Network is an online resource that offers tutorials and news related to AutoCAD and other Autodesk software applications. You can access it from any computer connected to the internet.

AutoCAD Free Download is the mainstay of the industry’s architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) software market. Since its first release in 1987, AutoCAD has become one of the most widely used 3D CAD packages in the world. It is used in the design of vehicles, commercial and residential structures, industrial plants, and high-tech products. It is a key building block in the design and fabrication of a wide range of products and objects, including everything from aircraft and spacecraft to bridges, parking structures, hospitals, and office buildings.
AutoCAD is also used in automotive engineering (including automobiles), shipbuilding and boatbuilding, and military engineering. AutoCAD is also the primary building block for products such as Autodesk Revit, the home building package of Autodesk; Autodesk Building Design Suite, the home of Autodesk Building Design; Autodesk Design Review, an on-line service that supports professionals who work in construction; Autodesk EcoDesign, a home package that manages green design projects; and Autodesk Resolve, a package for motion graphics and visual effects.
AutoCAD was originally named “MultiLine” after it was coded by Michael Perry, then named Michael P. Perry. In 1990, Michael founded Visual Works Inc. (VWi), a company later renamed AutoDesk. Shortly after founding VWi, Michael developed AutoCAD (as a DOS-based drawing package) using the LISP programming language.
A few months after AutoCAD’s initial release in 1987, AutoDesk’s first product, an on-line CAD package called Digitally-generated Construction Information Systems (DIGITS), was released. This product featured workflows that supported 3D design, 3D printing, and rendering. These “DIGITS” workflows were eventually renamed AutoCAD. In 1994, the DIGITS name was changed to AutoCAD.
AutoCAD is free to students and members of the public.
In August 2018, Michael Perry left his position as VP of AutoDesk Inc. and Chairman of the board of AutoDesk. Perry’s former position was assumed by David Treadwell.
Operating system support
The operating system required for AutoCAD to run on a computer is Windows. AutoCAD requires Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.

2. Select a file (PDF or DOC) and press “Enter”
3. Select a key and press “Enter”
I’m having trouble activating the program, because when I click the “activate” button, it says “The product is currently unavailable”. I’ve tried with many others files, all of them give the same problem, but the ones that work are different to the ones that don’t work.
Have you registered the activation file yet?
Log in to the Autodesk Web site.
Select Help > Product activation
Choose the option to install the activation file, or re-install the software.
Note: when you install the activation file, you need to be sure to install it in the correct location, so it can be found by the activation application.

AutoCAD’s Markup Assist feature, which facilitates the annotation of your drawings, is now even faster to use. The application recognizes all symbols and text in your files and highlights them automatically. The colors and styles of the marks you place can be controlled easily through the application’s color palettes and styles, and you can also save frequently used symbols in an easily accessible collection. You can even export collections to Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other applications. (video: 2:22 min.)
A new workspace for creating, editing, and sharing your sketches. You can work in the Sketchbook as you would in the drawing, and you can even sync your drawings with the cloud and collaborate with others. New features have been added such as multi-level shaded sketching, freeform geometry, pin insertion, straight and curved lines, and drawing in 2D and 3D. (video: 2:40 min.)
