Every new school year, we issue a community-driven manifesto of sorts. To help foster a culture of innovation, we’ve partnered with the Innovation Institute and Westpoint School to ask a bold mix of community members the questions they’re thinking about, and to help us to get an early look at the most pressing issues for our school. Beginning today, a new series of articles introducing you to the faces of West Point will reveal the Innovators — a pantheon of individuals who have thoughtfully articulated their perspectives and found approaches to goals that can instigate, inspire and connect others.

This year’s collection of Innovators represents a broad spectrum of young people across our community, and they have disparate skills and experience. One North Korean immigrant made her living working in a sweatshop as a child, while most of our Innovators live in Lakewood, NJ, where their families have embraced higher education since the 1660s and have a long tradition of values and innovation.

They’re all part of a larger community we want to represent, and are unified only by this article. In the words of Professor John Sietsema, “The West Point community’s growth comes from our attitude of serving others…and taking those attitudes of service and leadership and making them visible.”

Among the Innovators are a corporate chemist, an engineer building drones, an aerodynamics consultant, a software engineer, a 17th-year West Point cadet developing an app, a retired colonel handling the challenges of institutional racism and a performing artist creating a new form of accessibility to places of worship. These are a sampling of our diverse and innovating community, their values and beliefs, and our individual visions for West Point, including their advice for the incoming Corps of Cadets.
